The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is one of the most respected high school science competitions in the country, and serious USNCO preparation can set an ambitious student apart long before college applications begin.
Sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1984, the USNCO challenges thousands of students each year through a multi-tier system that ultimately selects the four-member team representing the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Whether your goal is a strong Local Exam score or a seat at the national Study Camp, success comes from understanding the structure and building a disciplined plan.
How the USNCO Competition Works
The program advances students through several tiers. Knowing what each stage demands is the first step in effective preparation.
- Local Exam — A multiple-choice exam (roughly 60 questions in about 110 minutes) administered in the spring through regional ACS sections. Many thousands of students participate, and top performers are nominated to advance.
- National Exam — A more demanding multi-part exam that typically combines multiple-choice questions, free-response problems, and a hands-on laboratory practical (past tasks have included titration, chromatography, and qualitative analysis). Top scorers earn Honors and High Honors recognition.
- Study Camp — The very top scorers nationally are invited to a multi-week summer camp for intensive theoretical and experimental training, where the IChO team is selected.

Who Is Eligible
USNCO is open to high school students, generally in grades 9–12, who meet ACS age and graduation requirements. To advance beyond local competitions to the National Exam and beyond, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Many other students may still take the Local Exam for practice. Students register through their local ACS section, and schools may nominate a limited number of candidates for the National Exam, so check your section's procedures early.
Building Your USNCO Preparation Plan
Strong chemistry competitors treat preparation as a year-round project, not a last-minute sprint. A balanced plan covers content mastery, problem-solving speed, and laboratory technique.
- Master the core syllabus. The exams span general and AP-level chemistry: stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, acid–base and redox chemistry, electrochemistry, atomic structure and bonding, and organic fundamentals. Build a solid textbook foundation before chasing advanced topics.
- Drill past exams. ACS publishes archived Local and National exams, many with detailed solutions. Working through these under timed conditions is the single most efficient way to learn the question style and pacing.
- Train for speed and accuracy. The Local Exam rewards quick, confident multiple-choice work. Practice estimating, eliminating wrong answers, and managing the clock so you are not stranded on hard questions.
- Practice the lab practical. The National Exam's hands-on component tests real technique and clear written procedures. If you reach this level, rehearse common experiments and learn to record observations precisely.
- Review systematically. Keep an error log of missed problems and revisit them weekly. Patterns in your mistakes reveal exactly where to focus.
Olympiad chemistry rewards depth over breadth. A student who truly understands equilibrium and thermodynamics will outperform one who has memorized a thousand disconnected facts.
Combining Free Resources with Structured Coaching
ACS offers genuinely valuable free materials, including past exams, recorded webinars, and small-group coaching sessions in the weeks before the Local Exam. These are an excellent starting point. Many students reach their potential faster, however, with structured guidance, accountability, and feedback on written and lab work. A strong mentor can compress months of trial and error into a focused study path.
