What Is AMC 12? Everything You Need to Know

Updated 2026-03-18

If your student loves math and is aiming for top universities, the AMC 12 is one of the most respected proving grounds in the United States and Canada.

The AMC 12 (American Mathematics Competition 12) is a national mathematics contest administered by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It is the upper-level exam in the AMC 10/12 family and serves as the entry point to a prestigious sequence of competitions that ultimately leads toward the International Mathematical Olympiad. For ambitious high school students, a strong AMC 12 score is both an academic challenge and a meaningful signal on a college application.

AMC 12 Format and Eligibility

The AMC 12 is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice exam. The problems generally increase in difficulty as you move through the test, so early questions are accessible while later ones demand real ingenuity. Importantly, the exam covers the full high school mathematics curriculum — including advanced algebra, geometry, and trigonometry — but excludes calculus. Success depends far more on creative problem-solving than on memorized formulas.

Eligibility is straightforward. Any student in grade 12 or below who is under 19.5 years old on the day of the competition may take the AMC 12. (Younger students who are ready for tougher problems often choose it over the AMC 10.) The exam is typically administered at schools, learning centers, and approved testing sites; check the official MAA website for current registration windows, fees, and approved locations, as these details change each cycle.

AMC 10 or AMC 12? The AMC 10 is open to students in grade 10 and below, while the AMC 12 spans the entire high school curriculum. Only the AMC 12 path can lead to the USA Mathematical Olympiad, so older or more advanced students usually aim for the 12.

AMC 12A vs AMC 12B and How Scoring Works

The MAA offers two separate versions of the exam each year: AMC 12A and AMC 12B. They are held on different dates, usually about a week apart, and contain different problem sets of comparable difficulty. Students may sit for one or, where offered, both — a student who takes both can use their better result toward qualification. Note that a student cannot take the AMC 10 and AMC 12 on the same day.

Scoring rewards accuracy without punishing thoughtful caution. Under the current MAA system, you earn 6 points for each correct answer, a smaller number of points for each question left blank, and zero points for an incorrect answer. Because there is no penalty for wrong answers but a small reward for leaving hard problems unanswered, smart test strategy matters as much as raw skill. The maximum possible score is 150. Exact cutoffs vary year to year, so always confirm current figures on the official site rather than relying on past numbers.

Where the AMC 12 Leads: AIME and Beyond

The AMC 12 is the first rung on a competitive ladder. Students who score in roughly the top tier of all participants are invited to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a harder, short-answer contest. From there, a combined index of AMC 12 and AIME performance determines invitations to the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) — a proof-based exam reserved for the very strongest students in the country.

Even if your student does not reach the Olympiad, qualifying for the AIME is a genuine distinction that admissions officers recognize.

A few notes on geography: students attending school full-time in the U.S. or Canada follow the standard invitational pathway, while students taking the AMC 10/12 internationally can still qualify for the AIME. This makes the AMC 12 a globally meaningful credential.

How to Prepare

The best preparation combines mastery of high school topics with deliberate practice on past problems and timed mock exams. Many students benefit from structured coaching that teaches the recurring techniques — number theory shortcuts, clever counting, and geometric insight — that distinguish a passing score from an AIME-qualifying one. You can read more strategy on our blog, or explore how the AMC fits alongside contests like USACO for STEM-focused students.

At BIAA (标奥), we help motivated students build the problem-solving foundation that competition math rewards. If your student is ready to take on the AMC 12, explore our competition math program to start training with purpose.
