AMC 10 vs AMC 12: Which Should You Take?

Updated 2026-05-20

If you're in 10th grade or below, you may be eligible for both. Here's how to choose.

The core difference

AMC 10 is for grade 10 and below and excludes trigonometry, advanced algebra and calculus. AMC 12 is for grade 12 and below and includes them. Both feed the AIME.

How to choose

  • 9th/10th grade with strong fundamentals → AMC 10 (higher percentile, friendlier syllabus).
  • Comfortable with trig and advanced algebra, or aiming for USAMO → AMC 12.

About qualification

AIME cutoffs differ for AMC 10 and 12 and change yearly. Focus on maximizing your score, not gaming the cutoff.
